Blepharitis is an eye condition in which there is inflammation of the eyelid margin and bacterial infection of the lids. It is a chronic condition which may lead to more severe eye infections if untreated.

Symptoms are itching, burning, redness, foamy tears,  mild pain, foreign body sensation, tearing and crusting around eyes on waking up. The symptoms are usually worse in the morning.

Treatment involves keeping the eyelid margin clean using warm compress to loosen crusts and oily deposits; and diluted baby shampoo to scrub the eyelid margins. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory ointments are also used to bring the condition under control. Most patients must maintain an eyelid hygiene routine for life to prevent recurrence of symptoms.
